Edinburgh Trip Part 1: Holyrood Palace (Plus Graveyards!)

I tried Photobucket. I then tried to delete old pictures from here to clear space. Neither tactic worked. So, sick and tired of the slowness and horrible user interfaces of both websites (I really dislike the updated editor on wordpress, I find it unbearable), I then went to my old photography blogs, hoping to find some memory available on one of them. Turns out anotherphotographyonthecitadel had 50% free, so I went back to the good old fashioned slideshow method (remember those days? magical times). It only took 1 1/2 hours, but whatever. I’ll do this again for part 2. I’ll also use that post to share my thoughts on the whole experience (I realize captions don’t exactly cover much detail, but again, after over an hour of messing around trying to get something very simple to work, I wasn’t in the mood to provide a story). Another Photography On The Citadel

Howdy folks,

So I’ve split the Edinburgh trip pictures into two slideshows. The first, which you can see if you scroll down, covers our journey from Edinburgh train station to Holyrood Palace. After a wonderful train ride up the coast (sadly no pictures there; an old lady stole our window seat, and then when we moved elsewhere, we ended up awkwardly sitting next to a man who cast us unimpressed looks between intense typing on his laptop and phone calls bragging about his car, job, pay…stereotypical yuppie, one might say), we unintentionally wandered in the wrong direction to Edinburgh Castle (our first planned stop…whoops) and ended up instead going to one of the Royal Family’s summer destinations, Holyrood Palace, via two cemeteries, because why not visit some dead people?

Durham/Seaham 2016

Howdy folks,

So the Edinburgh story and slideshow post isn’t quite ready yet, mainly because Vanna took over 400 pictures and I’m still trying to figure out which ones to use. In the meantime, I’m going to test out the Photobucket slideshow option with the pictures she took from Durham and Seaham this Christmas. There isn’t much I need to say for commentary, but I will apologize in advance for my creepy smile. That’s why I keep  my mouth closed for pictures, people.

Right…hopefully this works. If it goes well I’ll use Photobucket for the Edinburgh pictures too.

Fall/Autumn Pictures!

Even More Photography On The Citadel

Howdy all,

To celebrate the fact that Fall lasted longer than a whimper this year, (last year we had a nice September and then the cold set in), Vanna and I went for a walk a couple of days ago to document the changing colours of the leaves.  We didn’t get many pictures, but it certainly was gorgeous. Still is, in fact; driving to Crosby today was worth it for the views alone. Anyway, here’s the slideshow.

 

In other news, I have a job! Well, almost. They still need to complete background checks (a slow process so far, my fault for being a foreigner) so I’m not going to say anything more until I have a confirmed start date. It’s very promising though. A great opportunity, and it doesn’t involve filing(!), so yeah, I’m happy.

Cultivate Festival…From The Outside.

Sorry for the slight delay for this post, had some reports to transcribe…and I forgot I still had pictures for you.

Anyway, after our trip to Duluth, Vanna and I finished our anniversary week (I realize this was a while back now…) with a visit to her grandparents in the cities. On Friday we went to a car show, and then on Saturday we attended the Cultivate Festival in Minneapolis.

Well…sort of attended it. Because of the crazy amount of people going to the festival, we ended up parking over a mile from the park venue. After a long walk – humidity and heat only made it feel longer – we eventually arrived late to a jam-packed Loring park. The thousands of people did not deter Sharissa or Vanna, but it was too much for me, especially as I already wasn’t that keen on the festival…

Grand Marais (North Shore Part 4!)

Howdy folks,

Here we are at the fourth and final photography album of our anniversary trip to the North Shore. It’s been quite a journey, but it had to end eventually, right? If it is any consolation, I couldn’t have picked a better place for the finale.

So, after stops at many waterfall/river based locations, we headed to our final destination: Grand Marais, the coolest small town in America. Here’s the slideshow!

Grand Marais is such a beautiful town, isn’t it? So picturesque, so…perfect. It was a shame we had to leave so quickly. It’s definitely somewhere I want to go again…ideally for more than a couple of hours. In some ways, it reminded me of home. I really, really liked it there. And even though the experience was painfully short, I’ll treasure the memories.

Ah well. Maybe next summer we’ll go back. I know Vanna would like that too.

Our final stop before Grand Marais was at the Cascade River State Park. The weather was questionable at times (sporadic rain, fading light), but the scenery was beautiful. We even saw a baby bear! Didn’t get a picture of it mind, but it was pretty cool (we also spotted a coyote by the highway)! What did we catch on camera? Well there are views of Superior, waterfalls, and uh, a lumpy tree. Most of them turned out okay…the lighting inside the forest made it difficult. Anyway, slideshow is below. Enjoy!

Two Island River, Cross River, and Temperance River (North Shore Part 2!)

So we didn’t have the greatest time at Tettegouche. The weather was hot, wet and humid, and we were hot, sweaty and tired. Not the best of starts to our North Shore trip.

But despite our misery we persevered! And shortly after getting back on the highway we were rewarded with three beautiful, scenic river crossings. The slideshows for each stop are below. Enjoy!

Two Island River

Unlike the other two places, Two Island River wasn’t marked as a tourist stopping place. I happened to see it while looking for Cross River, and decided to turn the car back around to get a closer look. We spent at least thirty minutes exploring the area. It was pretty cool.

Rather busy, so not the best spot for us, but it provided some great views of Superior.

Silver Bay and Tettegouche State Park (North Shore Part 1)

So after spending Tuesday in Superior, Vanna and I spent Wednesday travelling the North Shore. We were on the road bright and early, our tiredness overruled by an enthusiasm to start the exploration (the threat of missing out on the motel’s complimentary breakfast may have also played a part in our early morning). I had planned several stops on the way to Grand Marais, the first of which was Tettegouche State Park. Why there? Well, each location on our visit list had waterfalls; Tettegouche just happened to have three. But before we got there, we stopped at Silver Bay, a small little town an hour out of Duluth…

Duluth, Fairlawn Mansion, And An Old Whaleback Ship (Pictures!)

Howdy!

So a few weeks ago Vanna and I celebrated our one year anniversary with a few trips away. Our first venture was north, to Duluth. The plan was to do things we haven’t yet done together, like drive up the North Shore and go beyond Gooseberry Park and Split Rock (previous vacation spots). Travel new roads, enjoy new sights…you get the picture. Because of the time-consuming nature of this northern journey (it would take at least four hours to drive to Grand Marais), Vanna and I figured our adventure would be better as a two-day trip, so we decided to stay overnight to reduce stress and give ourselves more time to explore. Thus we would drive to Grand Marais on Tuesday and then bum around Duluth and Superior (Wisconsin) before heading home Wednesday.
